Scholarship scheme - Inculcate

The Government of Kerala is introducing science propagation programme ‘Inculcate’ in association with the Universities in Kerala. The Kerala State Science and Technology Museum shall be the coordinating institution for the venture.
The programme is a continuation of the ongoing efforts to inculcate scientific temper among the young students in Kerala. The objective is to catch potential scientists at a young age and nurture their inborn talents for scientific learning and research. The program is intended to propagate the need for science education among secondary and higher secondary students of Government and Government Aided Schools.
Each of these students will be attached to a mentor who will be an outstanding researcher from our educational institutions. The students will also have the opportunity to interact with eminent academia from leading research institutes. The programme will be coordinated by eminent academics in the University community.
Five Universities in the State (Kerala, M.G., CUSAT, Calicut and Kannur) will conduct an orientation program. Fifty-two students (for the orientation program in a University) will be selected for a batch and they will be given training for a specific period. Provisions will also be made to visit research institutions and companies. Fifty percent of the total strength shall be girl students. Fifty percent students’ shall be from rural schools. Over and above, 5 students belonging to SC/ST category will also be selected.
Out of the 260 students selected for the orientation program, 52 students will be awarded (+5 out of 25 SC/ST students) a scholarship for five years. The amount of the scholarship will be Rs.750 per month. Rs.2500 will be given as contingency amount to meet the expenses for purchasing scientific books and to visit research institutions, industries and other scientific establishments within the country.
The programme will be for students who are completing seventh standard or those who have just entered the 8th standard (in 2009). The students will have the privilege to have attached to an eminent scholar (mentor) in the Universities or a research institution. The 57students selected for the scholarship scheme will be given an orientation programme at the Science and Technology Museum with the support of major research institutions within Kerala.
The students could also be given projects and the projects should be guided by the researchers of respective Universities.
Interested students of Govt/Govt aided schools admitted to the VIII th Standard during the academic year 2009-2010 are eligible to apply for the scholarship programme. The applications for the screening test downloaded from the Kerala State Science & Technology Museum website (www.kstmuseum.com) or plain paper applications including Name, Date of Birth, Name of School in which the student intend to study VIII th standard, Address for communication with phone number, Guardian’s name, Category (SC/ST/General), school in which the student studied VIIth standard, whether the school is in rural area etc with school authority’s authentication should reach the Director, Kerala State Science & Technology Museum, Vikas Bhavan P.O, Thiruvananthapuram –33 on or before 12th June 2009.
260 +(25 SC/ST) students will be selected from a Written Test (50 objective type questions) to be conducted on 28th June 2009 at a school in the respective District Head Quarters. The 260 + (25 SC/ST) students selected will have to attend the orientation programme conducted by the five universities (57 each). The universities will provide accommodation and other facilities to the selected students.

This is really a good information Mr.Mathew.Now we can clearly see how much serious is the govenment of Kerala about children's education.Nice move by the Government.I hope that other state government will very soon follow it.
