TSUNAMI – THE KILLER SEA WAVES


Tsunami is the term which is derived from the Japanese word “ Tsu” which means “harbour” and “Nami” meaning “waves”. Tsunamis are the waves generated by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or underwater landslides and can reach 15m or more in height devastating coastal communities. On 26th December, 2004, a killer Tsunami wave hit 11 South Eastern countries of Asia killing more than 1,50,000 people.

Features of Tsunami waves are:

1. They can be large
2. It consists of a series of waves.
3. It can occur at any time of day or night
4. It can travel up rivers and streams that load to the ocean.
5. It can move even 50 km pr hour on coastal plain
6. The force of Tsunami waves is enormous.

With the use of Satellite technology it is possible to provide nearly immediate warning of potentially tsuna-migenic earthquakes. It is a myth that they are caused by moon’s pull.

There are some suggested ways to minimize the risk from Tsunami, they are:

1. Make a list of items to bring inside in the event of a Tsunami
2. Have an engineer check your home and advise about the ways to make it more resistant to Tsunami water.
3. Avoid building or living in buildings within several hundred feet of the coastline.
4. Elevate coastal homes. Most Tsunami waves are less than 10 feet. Elevating your house will help to reduce damage of your property form most Tsunamis.
5. Follow instructions issued by local authorities.
6. Take precautions to prevent flooding.
7. Use a local radio or television station for updated emergency information.
