The astronomical building called the samrat yantra has been so calcullatedly
constructed that its sloping wall is exactly parallel to the earth's axis .The
building is a sun dial which shows the local time by its shadow .The samrat ya
ntra is the largest building instrument in the open air astronomical observat-
ory known as the jantar mantar situted in Delhi it is a wall shaped into right
angled tringle standing 68 ft. vertically upon the earth with a wing-like qua-
drant attched to either side.The wall casts its shadow on the quadrants indica

The hypotuse,or the structure starts from the ground level with a staircase
running up the slope,128 feet long Its hights point indicates the celestial.
North pole as it is inclined at an angle equal to the latitude of Delhi. The
samrat yantra was constructed according to astronomical calculations to serve
as an instrument for the study of planetry phenomena.The jantar mantar complex
consists of several such building instruments designed andbuild by jai singhII
of jaipur in 1724 AD Amanof great astronomical learning he had also composed a
book of astronomical tables called zeiji Muhammed shahi in persian.
