Meaning of Alcolholism --- " Alcolholism is a dependency on alcolho characterized by craving less of control, physical dependence and withdraw/symptoms and tolerance."
The word 'Drug' is defined as "any substance that, when taken into the living organism, may modify one or more of its functions." (WHO).
'Drug Abuse' is defined as selfadministration of a drug for non-dedical reasons, in quantities and frequencies, which may impair an individual's ability to function effectively and which may result in social, physical or emotional harm.
'Drug Dependence' is described as a state, psyshic and sometimes also physical, resulting from the interaction between a living organism and a drug, characterized by behavioural and other responses that always include a conpulsion to take the drug on a contunuous or periodic basis in order to experience its psychic effects and somtimes to avoid the discomfort of its absence. (A person may be dependent upon more that one drug.)
Thus these are two levels of drug misuse ---'Abuse' and 'dependence'. 'Abuse', the milder level involves some maladaptive use pattern e.g., 'remaining intoxicated throughout the day' and some imppairment in social or job functioning. 'Dependence' is a state of physical addiction, which involves 'tolerance' i.e. increasing amount of the substance are needed for achieving the desired result, and 'withdrawal symptoms' i.e., when the substance-use is stopped or reduced, unpleasant physical symptoms result. The withrawal symptoms and increased tolerance aresings that a real physical need has developed and that there are actual alterations in the body physiology. Addcts who are withdrawn from a drug become so agitated, depressed or otherwise miserabel that they can think of nothing but getting their next dose.
