About the Conference: In commemoration of the 150 years of 1857 revolt, the department has proposed to hold a two days International Conference to explore the role of women in the various phases of the national movement in India. Though women of all categories – young and old, rich and poor, educated and illiterates, peasants and professionals, tribals and royals, rural and urban had contributed significantly to the freedom of the country, there has not been much conscious efforts to unravel and organize the scattered and fragmented records, which speaks volumes about their contributions in the reconstruction of our nation’s history. There is a great need to integrate their history and include their contributions in the building of our nation. This conference is an attempt in that direction. It will provide with a forum for Historians, Social Scientists and scholars from different parts of the globe to share the views about the various dimensions of the main theme. The main objectives are: · To examine how women engaged with nationalist politics despite many constraints. · To bring out the undocumented contributions of less acknowledged but equally powerful women. · To find out how women’s lives were affected and molded by their involvement in the national movement
The Thrust areas of the Conference: Research papers are invited from Indian and Foreign scholars on the following dimensions of the main theme. 1. Women behind the scene. 2. Nationalism, Gender and Geography 3. Little known Heroines: Reflections from unconventional sources 4. Women Nationalists: As gleaned from archival sources 5.
