Interview in UPSC
|
Union Public service commission is the apex body for conducting examination for All India Services Central Services Group 'A' Engineering Services Scientific Services Medical and Para Medical Services and Other services.
I applied for one of the Group B services and was called for interview by the UPSC. I was very happy to receive a call letter for interview but at the same time I was a bit nervous as this was my first interview call from UPSC. There was still one week for the interview so I thought that I have some time to prepare for it. Then I started to think that how to prepare myself for it. I had no answer and it made me more nervous. Then I thought that I have nothing to loose if I fail and that I am still luckier than all those who were not called for the interview and did not have the chance to face the high level officers of the UPSC interview board. This thought made me stronger. A day before my interview date: I had sorted out all my documents and kept them in order. I had selected the formal wear for the day that suited me the most. I had my dinner on time and went to sleep at 10:30 pm. On the day of interview: I felt normal as on any other day of my life. After getting over with my daily morning tasks, I had breakfast (having proper sleep at night and proper breakfast before any presentation helps to fight nervousness. This I learnt during my college days when we used to deliver presentations to the jury members for our thesis projects). Then I dressed up well and after rechecking all the essential documents (call letter etc.), I left (well before the scheduled time) for UPSC, Dholpur House Shajehan Road. On reaching UPSC: I reached UPSC at 09:00 am.(reaching on time makes one more confident). At the reception desk I showed my call letter and I was directed to a waiting hall. There were few other candidates who were there. All of us started acquainting with each other. After some time a person came and verified our documents. We waited for another half an hour or so and one of the candidates was called. The interviews have started. My interview: Then came my turn. I was called and I went confidently towards the interview hall. On reaching the door, I pushed the door slightly and asked the permission to enter the hall. On entering the hall I made it sure that when I enter through the door I should not leave the door to make a banging sound. At the other end of the hall there were four members sitting at the table. I wished them good morning while I approached towards the table. The chairman of the board who was sitting in the middle on the other side of the table asked me to take the seat and I kept in mind to thank when I took the seat. I was not nervous I felt a great confidence on me. The first interaction was about my brief introduction: Since it was a brief introduction and time is also a constraint so I made it brief by not starting the intro with my name and my fathers name such silly things. I told them about my schooling, my college, my home town, what my father does and my hobbies and proficiency. Then a question came about my past experience: What have you done till date in the field you are associated with? I answered this by telling about the various projects and their merits that I had been involved with. Then came a technical question. I started answering it with ease and without stammering or hesitation. While I was explaining, one of the members passed on a paper and a pencil towards me and asked me to put my explanation on paper while I explain. I did it. Some more questions came. I answered them. Then came a question that I could not answer very well. One of the members offered me a glass of water which was kept on my right side over the table. I took two small sips. I was told that the interview was over and I can leave. I stood gently to avoid any noise while pushing the chair or hitting the table. I thanked them and left the hall by gently opening the door. After the interview: I was very confused about my performance in the interview. But after about three months the result was published and I was very happy to see my name in the list. Conclusion: One cannot predict that what type of question will be asked in the interview. It all depends on what comes in the minds of the people sitting on the other side of the table. The key to success in the interview is that one should have thorough knowledge of the related subject and should be able to answer confidently. Never try to answer the question that you don't know. Never argue with the board members. Be polite and well dressed.
I faced another interview with the UPSC after three years for Group A post. I got selected for this time also.
