Organic Pest Control :
In the aftermath of the Green revolution, India is now battling the residual effects of the extensively used chemical pesticides and fertilizers in the country’s soils and water. The decade from 1980 to 1990 alone saw the area under pesticides in India increase a whopping 20 – fold from 6 million hectares to 125 million hectares. After a high annual consumption of nearly 75,000 mt reached in the early 90s, implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) strategy has now started showing a declining trend in the use of pesticides in India. Yet, despite a comparatively low use of pesticides in India, the contamination of food products in the country is alarming. About 20% of Indian food products contain pesticide residues above tolerance level compared to only 2% globally. The reason lies in non-judicious use of the pesticides, lack of awareness and inadequate information dissemination amongst the farming community in India. Use of pesticides over the years has culminated in varied kinds of adverse effects viz., development of pesticide resistance and resurgence in insect pests and associated pest toxicity to all lives. This alarming situation has awakened everybody to seek suitable alternatives which will be pollution - free, environment - friendly, cheap and nature - based. A silver lining to this dark cloud has appeared in the form of biopesticides. Biologically based pesticides such as botanicals, microbial pesticides, pheromones, bio - control agents etc are becoming increasingly popular. These interesting parameters are now recognized collectively as ‘Organic Pest Control’. In recent years, concept of organic pest control has been encouraged. It is in this perspective, this program focusing various components of organic pest control has been launched.
