Traditional painting (patta-chitra ) and suclpture in Puri are the province of one heridity caste, known by name Mohapatra & Moharana. A group of these families live in the artist village "Raghurajpur" 10 Km. from puri towards Bhubaneswar, where both Indian and foreign visitors visit and purchase the items. The artist generally paints religious themes of lord Jagannath, SriKrishna, Rama etc. Most of them paint on traditional cloths. Another product of the Chitrakars is the pointed circular playing cards known as ganjifa (or Ganjapa). Old sets of these beautiful and charming small paintings (which traditionally are made in sets of 96 cards) are much sought after connoiseurs, and modern ones. Executed in a vigourous folk style, they are extremely appealing.
