The painted pottery of the Kachch region of Gujarat is of an exceptionally me- llow charm. Pots, jars, lamps and almost all kinds of kitchen utensils are turned on the wheel and later hand modelled and beaten with a wooden spatula and stone anvil. Utensils with a long or short neck, double rimmed or single rimmed collar, inwardly or outwardly bent, and iwth concave or convex body shapes of all kinds are created for a variety of specialised purposes. The lo- tadi, pot, is used for milk and curd, the tapeli, pan, for cooking vegetables and the kalasha, pot, for storing water. Red ochre, white and black are the three standard colours used to paint composite border patterns of the chaukhat or grid, vel or creeper, laher or wave, vichhi or scorpion and guli or flower. Subsequent firing makes these colours, white or black on red ground, or black and red on white, permanent and water-proof.
