An essential component of the marriage ceremony of the Warli tribals of Maha- rashtra is the chowk, a diagram featuring the square, executed on the mud-pla- stered inner wall of the room where the wedding is to take place. The rice - paste pictograph in red ochre is initiated by four ritual lines drawn by two sahvasinis or women whose husbands are living. These four lines represent the four kula devatas or clan dieties of the Warlis and essential from the bounda- ry area within which the Palghut devi, or goddess of fertility, is depicted with the sun and the moon. It is only after the goddess has been represented that the area outside the chowk is embellished with scenes from everyday life as well as other symbols of fertility, such as the horse. Once ritually inst- alled, the deity's abode is covered with a large cloth which is unveiled dur- ing the marriage ceremonies in order that the deity may bless the newly-weds. While the marriage chowk may be drawn only by married women, both men and wo- men decorate walls of their homes with scenes from the forest, hunting,harves- ting, festivities of song and dance, winnowing, toddy tapping and other highly decorative scenes from daily life.
