The Best Film of 2007: TAARE ZAMEEN PAR
|
I was fifteen when I first watched a movie of Amir Khan. I watched many more his films and they were absolutely entertainers. Some of Amir Khas’s hits include Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Andaz Apna Apna and Lagaan.
His directorial debut, Taare Zameen Par is probably his best film so far. The film is about a dyslexic child who is often scorned by his peers and scolded by teachers and parents. Eventually it is his Art teacher who identifies and understands his problems.
Not being a usually family entertainer, Taare Zameen Par is a serious film which conveys a message to the existing system, parents and teachers- that a lot of emphasis on academics is bad without letting a child develop his natural talent. Most importantly, one can relate to the characters of the movie, whether it is a parents, teachers or child. The film engages you emotionally specially in the scene when the boy is packed away to a boarding school because of his aggressive behavior and low marks. The boy stands in a lane of the boarding school watching his parent’s car vanish, unable to believe what has just happened to him.
Child artist Darsheel Safary, the boy who played the role of dyslexic child, delivers a performance that can only be called stupendous.
Director should be given a special credit for portraying the imagination of the child in the form of graphics and illustrations. In a particular scene, the boy has to write the answer to 3X9. The way that scene was created, showing the earth and Pluto was hilarious. We are not accustomed to seeing this kind of picturisation in most films, which only relay on dialogue.
The music of Shankar Ehsaan Loy smoothly blends with the story. The song Maa is the song, which left most of the audience in the tears.
Most of the people I talked with about the film praised the movie a lot. They were of the opinion that Aamir Khan’s is always the best movie of every year. There was a little criticism about the film being dragged on and some people felt it was a bit unrealistic towards the end. Amir Khan fans might find the film a bit disappointing because of the lack of comedy (compared to his other films) but I do not agree with this criticism.
I would still ask people to watch the movie as the message of the movie is strong, very true and the film as a whole is a real eye opener.
