The centralised admission process (CAP) for the six autonomous engineering colleges in the state, including the College of Engineering Pune (CoEP), will commence from June 18. This will be four days after the MHT-CET 2009 results are declared on June 14.

In all, 2,665 seats are up for grabs at these engineering colleges, which rank among the cream of technical institutions in the state and usually attract heavy demand. “Last year, over 12,700 pleas were received for admissions,” said N B Dhokey, in-charge of CAP for autonomous engineering colleges, while speaking to TOI.
The Mumbai-based Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), which has a deemed university status; Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI); Shri Guru Gobind Sinhji Institute of Engineering and Technology (SGGSIET), Nanded; Walchand College of Engineering (WCE), Sangli and the Vishwakarma Institute of Technology (VIT) are the other autonomous colleges. The VIT is the only private unaided institution among these while the rest are government-run or aided colleges.
Late on Tuesday, the state department for higher and technical education issued a notification declaring the CAP and its rules. The key features include a 10 pc hike in the fees at the five government-run and aided autonomous colleges the fee is now up from Rs 30,000 to Rs 33,000 per annum, said Dhokey.
For VIT, the admission rules have specified that students will have to pay the fees as set by the Shikshan Shulka Samiti (fee fixation panel).
Dhokey said, “This year, the admission-seekers will be broadly divided into four categories, viz A, B, C and D.” The A category students will be the SSC (Class X)/HSC (Class XII) pass students from Maharashtra, while B category relates to SSC and/or HSC passed students from outside Maharashtra with either the candidate’s father or mother being a domicile of Maharashtra.
Category C refers to SSC and/or HSC pass students from outside Maharashtra with father or mother being a central government/government undertaking employee. For instance, defence, national level institutions, central departments etc.
“Students falling in the C category will qualify for admission only in case of their government employee father or mother taking charge of his posting in the city before June 28, which is the last date for filing of applications,” said Dhokey.
Finally, category D relates to students of Maharashtra state employees, who are on deputation outside the state.
Dhokey said, “Unlike last year, when two admission rounds were held, an additional third round has been introduced this year to address the seats that remain vacant at the end of the first two rounds.”
