EM 473 Electronic Measurements & Instrumentation Credits:4

UNIT – I
MEASUREMENT AND ERROR:
Definitions, Accuracy and Precision, Types of Errors, Statistical Analysis, Probability of Errors, Limiting Errors.
DIRECT CURRENT INDICATING INSTRUMENTS:
DC Ammeters, DC Voltmeters, Series type Ohmmeter, Shunt type Ohmmeter, Multimeter, Calibration of DC instruments.
DC & AC BRIDGES:
Wheatstone, Kelvin, Guarded Wheat stone, Maxwell, Hay, Schering and Wein bridges, Wagner Ground connection. (11)

UNIT – II
ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS FOR MEASURING BASIC PARAMETERS:
AC voltmeters using rectifiers, True RMS responding voltmeter, Electronic millimeters, Digital voltmeter, - Ramp, stair case ramp, integrating, continuous balance, successive approximation, Q-meter, frequency counter, universal counter. (10)

UNIT-III
CATHODE RAY OSCILLOSCOPE
Introduction, Cathode Ray Oscilloscope, storage and sampling oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzer.
BIO-MEDICAL MEASUREMENTS:
Elementary Principles of Electrocardiograph, Electromyography, Electroencephalograph. (11)

UNIT – IV
TRANSDUCERS:
Introduction, Classification of Transducer, Analog Transducers, Resistive Transducers, Potentiometers, Strain gauges, Types of Strain gauges, Resistance strain gauges, semiconductor strain gauges, Resistance Thermometers, Thermometers, Application of Thermistors, Thermo couple construction, Measurement of thermocouple output, compensating circuits, Advantages and disadvantages of thermocouples, variable inductance type transducer, variation of self inductance, variations of mutual inductance, Linear variable differential transformer, Rotary variable differential transformer, capacitive transducers, Piezo-electric transducers, Digital transducers, Shaft Encoder. (12)

UNIT –V
DATA-ACQUISITION SYSTEMS:
Digital Data Acquisition System, various ways of multiplexing, Digital Recording Techniques, Computer Controlled instrumentation, IEEE 488 Electrical interface. (11)
