Spending per pupil on education is higher in Scotland than it is in England, new figures have shown.
According to the BBC, citing figures from the Scottish Executive, total spending on primary education in the 2005-06 school year was £1.6 billion, an average of £4,138 per pupil.
In secondary schools the amount spent totalled £1.8 billion, or £5,771 per pupil. But in English schools total spending equalled £3,684 per primary pupil and £4,638 for every secondary student.
However, a spokesperson for the Scottish government told the BBC said it was hard to make direct comparisons between the two countries because of differences in the education system.
But she did suggest that smaller class sizes in Scotland had affected spending levels, as well as pointing out differences in the way money is spent.
'Nearly all of our education spend goes to local authorities and we don't really prescribe exactly how they spend it, there's a large degree of local autonomy,' she said.
In related news, Scottish education secretary Fiona Hyslop recently said more work needs to be done to improve attainment levels in the first years of secondary school, following the publication of a report card detailing pupil success at different levels in the education system.
