Municipal high schools in sorry state - Berhampur

The high schools which were run by urban bodies were taken over by the State Government in 2004 for smooth functioning and better management.
However, these schools have been literally left in the lurch with no one looking into their problems.
They are neither getting the Government approved allowances and benefits nor any assistance from municipal bodies. In Berhampur circle itself, nine such high school with more than 3,500 students and 130 teaching and non-teaching staff have become victims of neglect.
Though the employees are entitled to State Government-approved salary and monthly allowances along with other benefits, they are yet to get them. They have not even received salaries for the last six months in the old pay scale.
Berhampur Municipality is deceiving them with assurance to extend PF benefit and pay arrears for the last three years, alleged the employees adding the Mass Education Department is being kept in dark on the these matters.
The employees were not being given account arrear slips, allowances and PF for the last three years. Meanwhile, 30 teachers have retired and four died. The retired teachers are now getting provisional pension.
Contacted, municipal executive officer Sudarsan Das said the details of dues of the employees are ready and the Mass Education Department has been briefed on it. The municipality is making efforts to repair the high school buildings.
