Railway budget presented in the parliament
3rd June 2009

Today railway minister Mamta Banerji presented the 15th rail budget in the parliament. The best thing that I observed was no change in passenger and freight charges.(I would have been more happy if they were reduced!).

This time mamata introduced a new term, NON STOP train facility. This is for the first time such a concept has been coined in the rail history. And I must say this is great news.

Also our railway minister has tried every bit to make this rail budget a PRO PEOPLE budget. And in my view she has succeeded. Introduction of monthly pass at Rs 25 for people with monthly income less than Rs 1500 is a very good move. On one hand it will give a poor to travel with pride in Indian railway, on the other hand it will reduce the corrupt practices of TTEs.
Facilities will also be provided for physically challenged so that they don’t face any inconvenience.

Mamata has also recommended deployment of doctors in long distance trains. Probably no rail minister had thought about this earlier. Also women RPF constables will be deployed to protect women.
Our rail minister has also introduced 57 new trains and added 27 new extensions.

She has also punched Laloo ji’s tatkaal facility which seemed to be anti people. Now tatkaal fee is reduced to Rs 100 and it can be booked only 2 days before as against 5 days in Laloo’s regime.
The non stop trains are named as Duronto trains. Initially there will be 12 Duronto trains.
Indian Railways has decided to acquire 18000 wagons this year to boost its fleet.

The railways have also decided to develop 50 stations as World class stations.
375 stations will be upgraded as Adarsh stations.
Here I have little confusion. A passenger spends more time in the train as compared to the station. Then why is there no mention of upgrading train facilities ??? why only stations are to be upgraded??? Does Mamata going to make us wait more in station???

A very practical decision is provision of toilets in DEMU/EMU trains having duration more than 2 hours. She has finally felt the pressure!
Yuva special trains

These are A/c trains meant for youth and lower income group. But how do you define a youth? Doesn’t seem as a good move.
Only ladies train at peak hours to be introduced in Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai.
Thank you didi!! You have presented a pro janata budget. Hope what you said are implemented this fiscal.
