Director of Collegiate Education K.V. Kodandaramaiah said here on Sunday that introduction of "practicals" in every subject of general education, adopting integrated courses through industry-institution partnership, making the language subjects theme based and providing add-on courses along with regular courses could be thought of while reforming the degree courses in the State. He was speaking at a conference on "Reforming the degree courses in the light of globalisation" organised by the Association of First Grade College Principals of Mangalore University.
Prof. Kodandaramaiah said that while reforming a degree course, the structure, content and delivery system (teaching method) should also be looked at. Degree colleges could adopt the "Reach-out" programmes to prepare the students to suit to the needs of the industry. In his keynote address, B.S. Srikanta, general secretary, Federation of Degree College Principals? Associations in Karnataka, said colleges should attempt to provide a holistic education to students. Colleges could think of providing computer course as an optional subject along with the conventional subjects such as History, Physics, Mathematics and so on.
M. Narahari, president, Federation of University and College Teachers? Associations in Karnataka, said care should be taken to ensure that the reforms did not lead to commercialisation of education. It was important to understand properly which model of education should be adopted.
Nagaraja Shetty, Minister for Fisheries and Endowment, who inaugurated the conference, suggested teachers to impart values to students to make them a good human beings.
