I was studying in Girls School. It was a missionary school ..St.Thomas, at Gole Market, New Delhi. I had a very strict schedule in the school premises unlike other schools. My cousins were also in convent schools but they were not having any such restrictions like to pray for half and hour and cram the prayers of Jesus or Lords. They used to have prayers in the morning and they were never forced to learn the prayers and recite in the prayer ceremony of morning.

I used to feel like a prisoner in the jail of Christians, am not criticizing the culture or religion but the ways in which the missionary schools are operating.

Rest is a history and I do not want to evaluate those days any more.

It was just a gesture to tell the missionaries that they should not stick to their religion only and try to convert Hindus too into a christian ..that is what they tried to do to their non - christian students.

I studied in St.Edward's School in Shimla. The school was run by Christian Brothers from Ireland.Their involvement and dedication was to be seen to be believed.Brother Browne stands out in the crowd for spending over 55 years in teaching. What a superb teacher. When he taught me way back in 1969 he was almost 75years.What memory and what love for teaching. His patience and
determination to make out something from the students was really an inspiration for us.His favorite phrase when slapping some student for misconduct was quite amusing. The guilty student whenever they saw the heavy hand being lifted to slap them would say "sir I am sorry" to which our Brother Browne would reply "No child you are not at all sorry ,you are sorry because you are getting hurt".On hindsight I would say that if we are truly sorry realization would come to us sooner.

Hi,

It was sad to read about bitter experiences about the Missionary school you studied. I too studied in a missioanry school at Neyveli, Tamilnadu. In my experience I never came through any sort of forced religous prayers or any attempt to convert non-Christian students. Even the prayer we offered every morning and the songs we sang used common words such as God; Almighty; Giver of wisdom; etc.

May be the school you studied did not follow the actual norms. I am so sorry for the bitter experience you had, the jail experience.
