Electric Drives : - Some Basics

In my current post I am going to discuss some basic parts and advantages of electric drive system.
What is an Electric Drive : -
I think this is the most common word used in any industry whether it is an electrical or a civil industry. If you are a student of engineering in any discipline then it is very important for you to know about electric drive.
In industries motion control is required at large extent. Some industries like rolling mills, paper machines, textile mills, machine tools, pumps, robots and domestic equipments like washing machine, fans etc. cannot imagined without speed regulation.
Now any system employed for motion control is called drive and may employ any of the prime movers such as diesel or petrol engines, gas or steam turbines, steam engines, hydraulic motors and electric motors for the purpose of mechanical power supply for motion control. Now, drives employing electric motors are known as Electric Drive .
Parts of an electric drive : -
(As this posts is not for electrical professionals, this is for any engineering student, thus I am currently providing names of various parts of an electric drive. I am writing for professionals also and after completion I will provide link to the professional post.)
Basic parts of an electric drive are : -
> Source : - It provides operating torque or essential energy to the drive to work.
>Power Modulator
As the name indicates it controls the power and hence the speed of the motor.
>Motor : -
An electrical motor is the motor for which this system is employed to control its speed.
>Control and Sensing units : -
Sensing unit sense the speed of motor and control unit compare it with a predefined speed and if the speed is high the it will slow down the motor and if the speed is low then it will increase the speed of motor.
I think the concept of electric drive is now clear to you.
Advantages of Electric Drive :-
> Flexible control : - Electric drives has flexible control charactersticks. The steady state and dynamic charactersticks of electric drives can be shaped to satisfy load requirement.
> They are available in wide range of torque, speed and power.
> They have high efficiency as compare to other drive system.
> They can be simply applied to any condition like explosive or radioactive conditions where other drives are not acceptable.
> They are pollution free.
> They can operate in all four quadrants of speed-torque plane with smooth decrease and increase in speed.
> Unlike other prime movers, their is no need to refuel or warm up the motor. They can be started instantly and can immediately with fully loaded conditions.
