This article explains in detail what are the different measures for cholesterol control.

Cholesterol Levels

Desirable: <200 mg / dl
Within the limits: 200-239 mg / dl
SENIOR: 240 mg / dl

Formula to calculate the LDL cholesterol

LDL cholesterol = total cholesterol - HDL cholesterol - [triglycerides: 5]

LDL cholesterol values

• Risk limits 130-159 mg / dl

• High risk 160 mg / dl

Treatment with diet is recommended for patients at high risk of LDL cholesterol, have 2 or more risk factors (obesity, smoking, stress, hypertension).

Treatment with medication is recommended in all patients beyond the level of LDL cholesterol of 189 mg / dl and those with values between 159 and 189 mg / dl, with 2 risk factors (obesity, smoking, stress, and hypertension).

The diet tends to reduce fat intake to 30% by increasing the unsaturated saturated. If in spite of diet on levels 2 months failed to improve treatment should be associated with drugs. Blue fish containing n-3 fatty acids Omega-substituted decreases the risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.

The cholestyramine when cholesterol is higher than 265 mg / dl, reduces cholesterol levels an average of 23 mg / dl. The 10% gemfibrozil increases HDL cholesterol. The Lovastatin lowers cholesterol by 36%.

You also need to control stress, personality and exercise to prevent overweight and control the possible onset of diabetes.

• Utility of diet: It should be diet and avoiding other risk factors.

Effective for the vast majority.

• Control analysis: Getting a control every 5 years.

• Usefulness of Medication: Exceptionally necessary for patients with risk factors.

2. Moderate:-
Values of analysis:
Cholesterol 250-300 mg / dl
Cholesterol - LDL 175-215 mg / dl

• Control analysis: There must be a control for 3 months and then every year.

• Usefulness of Medication: are needed for patients with risk factors and not be controlled with diet 6 months. Using statins, resins, fibrates.
