The school education department has proposed a hike in fees charged by government-aided schools citing escalating expenditure. It puts down the need for an upward revision to an increase in the number of examinations held in a year from two to nine ~ something decreed by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. The proposal for a hike, which comes after 15 years, has also been prompted by ever-increasing electricity charges. Since the commence of the academic session since last May, nine examinations (eight unit tests and one annual examination) are being conducted in all government and government-aided schools. While the number of examinations conducted have gone up, the fees charged from the students remain unchanged. This is making the government reach deeper into its pockets. The school education department proposal aims to provide some relief to the government. Since 1992, students of government-aided rural schools pay Rs 63 per annum while their urban counterparts pay Rs 75 per annum. This year, the school education department proposed nearly a 200 per cent hike in fees. It now wants rural schools to charge Rs 260 and urban schools Rs 300 per year. Mounting electricity bills have prompted the proposal in a way. More and more power is being burnt as more and more computers are being installed. The schools currently charge Rs 12 every academic year from each student for it. It also happens that the state government has decided to introduce 500 fresh posts for computer science teachers in government-aided schools. The proposal, mooted by the directorate of school education, will soon be circulated among different teachers’ organisations to seek their opinion. The department will accept the proposal after considering the teachers’ opinions and suggestions.
