There is always room for more....
|
All things good come in doubles. Or rather how much people can take these days. Authors and film makers are cashing in on the fact that people just can’t get enough of things. Sequels are a great hit among the masses. Shreq 2 has amassed the highest collection in the first week by an animated film. And it was not because of the fact that it was so good, but because of the fact that Shreq (the prequel for this film) had given it such a strong hold on people’s minds, that they simply cannot resist the fact that one more was coming their way. Spiderman, the name says it all. The first movie was a super hit… the second one just blew all the chart records off, grossing over $373,500,000… and I, for one cant wait for the third one… due to be released on the 4th of may of this year. So frankly speaking, sequels are the way to go. The Fast and the Furious is also a very good example. All the three of them were one better than the other. And they simply ran on grounds of the predecessor being very nice, and because of the fact that all of them had but a cliché in common with the previous one. Neither was a sequel as such but they did not go far away from the main fact. There are many more examples of this rave in the world... to name a few more will be the trilogy of the lord of the rings, the matrix, the matrix reloaded and the matrix revolutions, ocean’s eleven and ocean’s twelve, the Bourne identity and the Bourne supremacy. And list goes on my friends. Indian film industry is also nowhere behind on this. Sequels have become a craze in Bollywood these days. Films like Dhoom 2, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, and Krrish, go on to prove my point here. In fact Lage Raho has been liked so much that work on the third part has already begun… so this just goes to show how much people love watching their favorite characters, doing the same things again, but in a different context.
This was about the films. Continuation is no stranger to the world of literature either. People adore the fact that if a good book is done, another one will be soon coming their way. The Harry Potter series is one of the most, if not the most successful series in the world. Its success can easily be witnessed in Hollywood also, with Daniel Radcliff, being an overnight success owing to the character of Harry. In literature, there is one more way of getting back on the reader by just changing the plot and keeping the rest of the things same in the book. When I say the rest of the things, I mean the characters and the main theme. In the case of Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons and The Davinci Code, Robert Langdon is the protagonist of the story, being a lecturer on religious symbolism at Harvard. The next book by Dan, the Solomon key, also will have Robert Langdon as the main character. Robert Ludlum, also one of the greatest writers of this era, has used this tactic to pull in readers. His trilogy, the bourne identity, the bourne supremacy, and the bourne ultimatum, has amassed great success, owing to the fact that there’s always room for more.
So to top it all off, I think sequels are the way to go in this era dear friends. If you really liked a film or a book and a desire creeps into you to have more of it, don’t worry, there may be a next one right round the corner for you…
