An increasing number of students dropping out from Urdu schools after securing primary education, especially girls, has prompted the Howrah Municipal Corporation to construct Urdu-medium schools to impart higher education to Muslim girls. One such school is already being constructed at 432, GT Road, Howrah. The school has been named Rokeya Begum Urdu High School for Girls. Spread over 17 cottah of land, the four-storeyed school building is likely to open within six months. The school will initially have Classes V to X. The municipal corporation is also trying to set up Classes XI and XII offering courses in arts, science and commerce. The civic body has provided the land and Rs 5 lakh to lay the foundation. Mr Swadesh Ranjan Chakraborty, MP, has given Rs 25 lakh to build the school. The municipal corporation is looking out for more land to construct as many schools as possible. An official of the municipal corporation said: “This initiative has been taken for uplift of Muslim girls. There are no separate schools for them in Howrah. The five Urdu schools in the district are all co-education schools. It becomes a little difficult for parents to send their daughters to these co-education schools after they complete primary education because of their conservative culture. But at the same time, it is important that these girls receive education so that they can become independent.” The official added: “We are looking for plots to open more such schools for girls.” Md Salim, MP and chairman of West Bengal Minority Development and Finance Corporation, said: “There is a large population of Muslims in Howrah but only a few Urdu schools. We are trying to open both primary and higher secondary schools so that students do not have to drop out.
