VOIP

What is VOIP?

VOIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. Or simply it means transmission of voice over internet. VOIP is basically a technology through which one can have telephonic conversation using internet.

Almost all internet users are well familiar with google talk, yahoo chat, rediffBol etc. These all are a form of VOIP. Voice can be sent and recieved from one destination to other no matter how far both are from each other.

But very less people know about the fact that through VOIP you can actually use internet telephony through your simple basic/PSTN phone. Unlike google talk where you can only talk through a headphone connected to internet other VOIP services allow you to attach your base phone to your VOIP to make calls.

Basic requirements for VOIP

Voip basically requires a broadband internet connection (preferred) as in dial-up connection voice transmission is not of a high quality. The speed must be at least 54 Kbps for good quality. Second thing required is a DSL/ADSL modem that can be configured to make calls from your base phone and lastly a PSTN/Base phone box. ADSL/DSL modem is generraly provided by the service provider that is already configured according to their server.

Major VOIP service providers in India.

There are so many telecom companies providing VOIP services in India. To name a few are: Vonage, Skype, Worldphone etc.

You can get account in these companies and they will provide you with the necessary set-up. Otherwise you can simple use their voucher and call through headphones only. The voice quality will be as clear as in a mobile transmission.

Benefits/Usage of VOIP

The main and the best advantage of VOIP is its cheaper rates. VOIP is basically beneficial for ISD calls where you can easily make calls for just Rs.0.40/min to Rs. 1.00/mins. It may vary with the countries. But for most of the countries the rates are this much only. Its not only for ISD but for STD and local calls as well.

Almost all the call centres today uses VOIP services to make ISD calls to their customers where they have to talk for long hours. For domestic purposes also people prefer VOIP over mobile phones to make ISD calls.

Mode of payment

To pay your bills you can either avail for a prepaid connection of a postpaid one based upon your convenience. You can either get vouchers and use it as per your requirements. You can pay all your bills online and if you are a prepaid customer you can recharge your account anytime by your own. You just need to have a credit card for that.
