The Indian media is witnessing an unprecedented boom, what with a multitude of television channels, radio stations, newspapers and magazines, not to mention the all-pervasive Internet (online journalism, blogs, et al). The biggest advantage of the media industry is the flexibility it offers in terms of jobs. While a specific medium does require certain essential skills and training, one has the flexibility to work in various streams of the media. For instance, a person working as a freelance journalist for a magazine, could do voiceovers for a radio jingle as well as write a script for a video documentary. Also, while electives and specialisations are part of the syllabus, most postgraduate media-related courses in the United States consist of core modules, which provide a comprehensive overview of the media industry in general.

Eligibility

Students wishing to pursue a postgraduate degree in media in the US need not have done mass media at the undergraduate level. However, 90 per cent of universities in the States require 16 years of education or a substantial amount of work experience in communications-related fields.“For the US, students have to appear for the GRE and the TOEFL. In addition to this, students will have to make a resume, letters of
recommendation and transcripts,” says study abroad consultant, Karan Gupta. Adds Viral Doshi, Counsellor,“Basically what these universities are looking for is good communication skills, which can be gauged from the recommendation letters from professors and employers, personal SOP, verbal content of the various exams.” Often students are required to send copies of their published/ broadcasted work. If the student has no such sample, then he/ she may also send works written/ displayed in the classroom.

Course details

In general, most media-related postgraduate courses in the States are divided into core modules and electives. The compulsory modules cover generic issues for aspiring media professionals such as ethics, communicationand society, basic reporting skills, ADD. For the electives, students have the choice to specialise in fields such as print (newspaper and magazines), broadcast (radio and television), and the Internet (online journalism etc).“The student should have enough electives to choose from. Students should see the course content in detail and make sure the specialisation he or she wants is actually available at the university,” advises Gupta. Adds Doshi,“The content of a media-related course should be helpful to students even if they need to come back to India, and be useful out here. It should be valuable in the context of the Indian media and students should be able to translate and deliver the system in which it’s required to do here.” Thus choosing electives with an international flavour such as really pays off.

Scope

Having a master’s degree from an international university works wonders for someone who wishes to work in India. In addition, the exposure offered by such a course abroad is note-worthy. On the other hand, for those who’d like to work in the media industry abroad, the chances are slimmer.“Unlike other conventional careers like engineering and medicine whereby many Indian students get placements, the media is such an industry which requires people accustomed with the local customs of the place. Hence, Indian students may find it difficult to get jobs easily in the States,” cautions Doshi. However, students must make up for this hurdle by interning with media houses abroad, so as to add to their experience. The demand for media professionals is at an all-time high and students can make the most of their international education by being proactive.“The US gives the students the option of working for one year after completing their course. This is called OPT or Optional Practical Training. After this period a student can work on an H-1 visa. As of now, students graduating from 'good' schools generally do not have a problem getting a job,” encourages Gupta.

Parting shot

We are currently living in the Information Age, at the core of which lies communication. While the media is still considered to be‘offbeat’, it is definitely a sunrise career, poised to boom in the near future. What the leading media giants of the world making their foray into India, the industry is becoming more structured, and there are plenty of job opportunities to be had.. Each media company now runs like a business conglomerate, and they need professionals to manage it, so a master’s degree is definitely very useful.
