Indian students enrolled on masters’ programmes can be found in almost every established education system in the world today. Information on where, how and why to study internationally is available to Indian students and their parents through a number of sources, not least the Internet and international education fairs.
One area that causes more confusion than almost any other, however, is when a student should submit their application material. The following provides a survey of the masters admissions procedures for some of the most popular countries that Indian students study in.
United States
US universities operate an application system that is very specific to their institution and, in some cases, individual Masters programmes. For example, one US University may operate a number of different deadlines according to the different academic faculties that offer Master’s degree. It is common for US universities to offer two starting points in the year– the Fall semester beginning in late August and the Spring Semester, beginning in January each year. With two entry points come two deadlines and you need to be very careful in meeting the correct deadline for the entry point that you are interested in.
When applying for the Fall semester, an application deadline of either January 15 or February 15 is common; while applying for the Spring semester, a deadline of November 1 is most likely. However, individual academic programmes and different universities will offer varying deadlines according to their own criteria. Decisions on applications can take between three and ten weeks, depending on the popularity of the program and the specific deadline. In almost all cases, standardised tests such as GMAT, GRE or TOEFL will need to be submitted with the other application material.
