The natural resources around the earth are under severe stress, especially due to urbanization and industrialization. The natural and man-made disasters are also threatening the very existence of life in certain parts of the earth. Newer information on these issues are pouring from various branches of knowledge and new tools & techniques like remote sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS) & Global Positioning System (GPS) are also emerging to identify their spatial dimensions. Keeping the above facts in mind the Department of Geography, Bharathidasan University is organizing a National Workshop on GIS for Natural Resources & Disaster Management between 3 and 7 March, 2008 to benefit the higher secondary school / College and University teachers and research scholars who teach and work in environmental studies, natural resources and disasters using remote sensing, GIS and GPS.
