All-round progress of human society is solely dependent on energy. In view of fast depletion of the
reserve of conventional energy sources, it has become imperative not only to harness and develop renewal
energy sources, but also to adopt and vigorously practice energy conservation measures. This can only be
possible if the technocrats, bureaucrats, industrialist & common people think & act together.
On 29th Sept. 2001 Energy conservation Act. came into existence by an Act of Parliament. Bureau of
Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India, with active co-operation & participation of
different state governments has been making continuous efforts to implement the Energy Efficiency Act-
2001. Energy efficiency Act. is applicable in the commercial building or building complexes, factories having
a connected load of 500KW or greater. Act is also applicable to all those buildings having floors area of 1000
m2 or greater. Bureau of Energy Efficiency has formed a Building Code applicable to the building system
such as storage spaces, mechanical system & equipment-including heating, ventilation & air conditioning,
services, hot water heating, interior & exterior lighting & electrical power & motors etc.
