Cricket is a glorious game, it is very popular in all the commonwealth countries. Now it is being played in more than twenty countries in almost all the continents. Great players like Bradman, Sobers, Hutton, Chandrashekar, Kapildev and Gavaskar and many others have made the game immortal. In modern day cricket Sachin Tendulkar, Jayasurya, Brian Lara, Brett Lee, Wasim Akram, Rahul Dravid, Steve Waugh to name a few have attained the status of stardom in the game of cricket.
In the seventies of the last century, India could boast of four great spinners in B.S.Chandrashekar, E.A.S.Prasanna, B.S.Bedi and S. Venkataraghavan who have not only matches but also won hearts of many. B.S.Chandrashekar stood out as the most dangerous bowler with his fastest leg-breaks and googlies. He would bamboozle even the great Vivian Richards.
Writing on Chandra, Gavaskar says 'Chandra bowled superlatively and was always a bowler whom the West Indies respected. They tried hit him off the ground but did not succeed and therefore decided to plays as he came, rather than plan anything against him. To plan anything against Chandra was in fact, to invite disaster. His bowling was something which you really could not predict.
Chandrashekar made his debut in 1964 against the English team led by Mike Smith. In a career spanning 15 years he took 247 wickets in test matches. In fact, in the 1972-73 series at home against England he lowered the mark set by Vinoo Mankad for the highest number of wickets against England in a series by capturing 35 wickets, one more than Mankad's tally.
Chandrashekar retired in 1981. He was awarded a benefit match and according to Gavaskar whatever he got by way of his benefit somehow was not really commensurate with the efforts he had put in for India, despite his handicap, his bowling was struck by polio, but he did not think that it was a disadvantage. Still it was a sign of affection that the people had for B.S.Chandrashekar 'He was totally a non-controversial man, a man who went about his own ways without getting involved in any controversies on and off the field, he was a very likeable man you could rely upon to be your friend', a great words from a great.
According Chandrashekar, the second test match at Manchester in 1971 was the toughest test match in his career, but he took eight wickets in that match, the test match at Oval in 1971 was his greatest test match.
Rahul Dravid is his favourite cricketer according to him Dravid is the finest batsman at the moment because of his sound technicality and high reliability.
B.S.Chandrashekar is a lover of music, a great fan of Late.Mukesh, the singer. They were great friends too. When Mukesh died suddenly on a concert trip to USA, Chandra who normally does not love to fly, flew to Bombay to attend Mukesh's last rites.
Gavaskar has paid the greatest tribute to Chandra when he wrote 'He used to call me 'Sun' and it was a name he used with affection and I am privileged to be his friend, I still look forward to going to Bangalore and every time I go there it is great fun to be able to sit with this greatest spinner and chat about our yesteryears'.

| Author: m v lathkar 28 Oct 2009 | Member Level: Gold Points : 2 | Many of the successful bowlers are unconventional. Take the example of Murali or former ausie speedstar Jeff Thomson or Shoaib akhtar with their unusual bowling actions. chandra's ability to convert his disability into advantage is a proof of his great character. He played sixty odd tests and took over 250 wickets in nearly two decades. the amount of Cricket is being played today, had it been available to Chandra he surely would have been well over 600 wickets if not more.
