I think my first interview was when I had applied for a bachelor's degree in a woman's college in Chennai. There were very few options that I were given and I had to choose between a course in Economics,Tamil and English and I had to fill up the application on the spot jostling in between a crowd of a few hundreds, listing my options in terms of preference.
In confession I do not really know if that was the reason but I stated that my first option was English 'Litrature'and surrendered my forms. I was called in eventually and the headmistress looked deep and solemn as she gazed at my from through her bifocals as another lady whispered something into her ear.
Finally the pricipal put a piece of paper in front of me and handed me a pen and said, 'write down your first choice of course in block letters.'
I was terrified. I knew something had gone wrong somewhere and also knew that in my trepidation I might do something worse than I had done before. So I sat there with tip of pen hovering over the paper like a vulture, not knowing what to do.
The principal the kind old thing that she was, opened the prospectus, turned the book to face me and said, 'You had applied for the course in English Literature. You can find the spelling here. Copy it down for me.'
I was stunned. So that was the mistake, a crazy stupid mistake that they might laugh about like the dickens after I was refused a seat.
'I am sorry, mam,' I said and proceeded to copy the letters down as clear as I could. Then the gave the small chit to her and literally ran out of the room.
A week later, I received an admission note from the college, asking me to join their course in English literature.
