How Power Saver Device Works

Last week one salesman came to my house. He was selling Electricity Power Saving Device. He claimed that using power saving device I will save 40% on my electricity bills. I was surprised and asked him can I really save 40% on my electricity bills by plugging a small box into my AC socket? He said yes.

Now days we see many such sales persons promoting energy saver products home to home and we also see number of products have been advertised on TV and online. But my mind thrown me prompt question; is really are this energy saving products will save my electricity bill? I studied about this energy saver product over internet and after Googling I some what understood about the product and let us understand the reality of these exciting claims and understand how Power Savers work.

A device so called Energy Saver or a Power Saver or Electric Energy Saving Equipment is a device which you plug in to your power socket. By keeping the device connected to your power socket it will immediately reduce your power consumption and the savings can be between 25% and 40%.

We all have studied in our Physics that Electricity is not stable. There is always rise and fall in the voltage when electricity flows. This fluctuation In voltage is called as “Spikes” remember we use Spike Guard in our Computer System. This sudden rise and fall in voltage is not used by the electric appliance as input and thus these spikes go as waste of electricity. These power spikes also convert electrical energy into heat energy which leaks power from your circuit. This heat generated will sometimes damage to the wiring and also to appliance.

Power Saver models that are available in the market use the same technology; it consists of a capacitor inside the devices which is used to store the electric energy and release the electricity without fluctuating without the spikes. The systems also automatically remove carbon from the circuit which also encourages a smoother electrical flow. This means that you will have less power spikes. More of the electricity flowing around your circuit can be used to power your appliances than before.

Not only the voltage fluctuations but many other factors affect the efficiency of this Power Saver Devices. The device when plugged it will start working and giving the result but it performs well after at least one week of its usage. The rate of savings will depend on what kind of appliances you have connected. All appliances are different but expect savings of up to 25% on lights, 30% on air-conditioning units and up to 35% on other appliances. So the Power Saver is effective where voltage supply is less stable. Locations close to shops, restaurants and light industries tend to gain additional savings from Power Saver devices.

So how can you be sure that your Power Saver is working correctly?

This Power Savers are very handy to use they come fitted with a light to indicate that it is working. Just like you use spike guard it has 3 LEDs indicator to show that it is working fine the same principle applies here. Now assuming that the light is on and that you leave the device unattended you can expect savings immediately. Also let us know that electricity companies do not send person every time to check the meter reading some times they send bills by calculating the average consumption but yes at some areas it is checked personally because this we can check as a photo in the bill. So often bills are calculated on monthly averages which self-correct over time so please be aware of that in using your bill as a guide to check how much is the saving after you have plugged the Power Saver Device.

Normally the Power Saver devices are sold with a 30 days guarantee. If you have decided to buy the Power Saver Device then I personally suggest that order your Power Savers from companies offering 100% guarantees for longer than 30 days. Remember that 30 days may not be sufficient time to truly know if the device is working as effectively as you expect. Try to work with companies that extend their guarantee dates to at least 60 day which gives you a much longer period to assess the benefits.

Many Power saving gadgets are available in the market.

1.Use LED lamps in most of the rooms.
2.50 to 70 watt fans are availble in the market.
Use them.
3.Use smaller fridges with rating.
4.Replace window ACs with Split ACs.
6.Buy front loading washing machines.

1. capacitor can help in supplying part of the large starting current drawn by motors and other inductive loads. in fact electricity authorities are now insisting on installation of power capacitors in high load connexions like motors above 3 HP.
how capacitors help in reducing power consumption in other areas is not clear.
2. it is calimed that this plug-in power saver can remove carbon ( presumably from contact points in switches and connexions ). how it works , if it works , needs to be expalined.

Some of the electrical equipment manufaturers claim to manufacture product to save electricity cosumption.
But electricity energy consumption can not be controlled or saved by putting energy saving devices along with electrical appliences.
Actually such energy savers are nothing but voltage stabilisers connected along with electrical appliences. They are marketing the stabiliser in the name of Energy Saver.
It is true that the momentary voltage fluctuations may damage any electrical appliance for which Voltage Stabilisers have got funtion to stabilise the system instantly.
During prolonged low system voltage the electrical equipment say Pump motor of 2 hp capacity at specified 230 volts will draw more current at such lower voltage for performing its rated capacity to work and the energy consumption will be increased as the suare of higher current valu and subsequently increases the total power consumtion.
This may be cleared from the following emperical relations of current, voltage, time and energy cosumtion:

Energy consumtion is drectly proportional to Sq. of current*rated voltage*time in hours.
However power saving is a big suject in Electrical Engineering.
Best way to save power is to use Branded electrical appliences, replacing Incandacent filament lamps by CFL lamp or tube light.
Electrical applinces like A.C machine,TV,Computers,Gyser etc should be used in a controlled way as per instructions given in their manuals.
We have seen in the market that picture tubes in tv and computer are being replaced by LCD for very negligible heating.
Heat emissions in electrical equipment is one of the main sources of high energy consumtions.

Hi,
This is really a very useful resource. thank you for posting such kind of post. it is calimed that this plug-in power saver can remove carbon ( presumably from contact points in switches and connexions ). how it works , if it works , needs to be expalined.this post will useful for many other people.keep posting.. Good luck.

Though, I am not sure all above info is correct or not but as Mr. Nilesh Panchal is Dimond here. Hence, it's hard to believe he will post non-seance.

I am also looking for information on power saver devices before buying them and find this. This seems to be a good info (even if not 100 true). As far as Carbon is concern I think these produces reduce or prevent carbon deposit after installation.

Thanks for above information. If anyone have additional information please share with us.

I work for a utility in Ontario and we have tested these devices in our shop, and these devices are a scam for residential billed customers. They do correct the power factor but since residential customers are only billed on kw.h they do nothing to reduce a customer bill. That is loads use watts, and residential customers are billed on watts, so it doesn't matter what the PF is. Our tests not only proved this but that these devices actually use a small amount energy, which ironically drives the customer bill up.

PF only comes into play with larger commercial customers who are billed on Peak Demand. The theory is that customers use Watts and the utiltiy supplies VA, so for the same load (watts), the lower the PF the more the utility must supply in VA. To combat this the utility bills is the higher of Watts or 90%*VA, thus the customer is charged more for a low (bad) PF, thus they can reduce their demand charge by raising (or fixing) their PF. PF is lowered by inductive loads, thus adding capacitance raises it. These little expensive devices are just capacitors

I read the white papers on these devices, and they did not report anything that was untrue, but the advertising is very misleading. Some of the technical people at our work were fooled, until it was explained and our results revealed

Our residential meters don't measure reactive power. You can't save money by plugging in a reactive power correction device.

I have tested a device manufactured in malaysia, it is a electricity management device for AC, Designed only for AC, pratical since about 80% of the electricity in our office is consumed by air conditioners. It saved 23% in KWH on my electricity meter hourly. Not available here commircially. Their website (www.arcticsave.com) claims an ROI of less then 2 years, so should be quite econmical to install

FIRS I like to say the power has two componant active power and reactive power the active consuming by heaters boilersand reactiver generally taken by motors microwave oven....etc, the active power can not saved because it mean work, heat and can save it only for certin cnditions by advanced devices about 20:30% but the device u talk
about used capacitors to reduce reactive power and increase voltag and the home energy meter only measure active energy
energy=active power(kw)*time(hr)
