500 DAYS OF SUMMER (2009) Director - Marc Webb Cast - Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel.
Tagged as a romantic comedy, 500 days of summer, Webb's first effort, tells the story of a guy who recounts the days he has spent being in love with the love of his life. Summer Finn(Zooey) is just as average girl coming from an average background with an average personality. But theres something about her that makes people go crazy about her wherever she goes. Same thing happens to Tom(Joseph). The minute he sees her he knows that she is the one.
Now at this point everyone must be thinking that this is just another love story. This is not the case. In fact it is not even a love story. Summer never believes in true love. All she wants from Tom is a casual relationship. At first Tom agrees but as time passes by and they become closer, he realizes that the things they share wouldn't be shared between two people if they were just in a casual relationship. While Tom goes on falling more and more in love with Summer, Summer on the other hand falls out of love with Tom. So they break up. This is where the real story starts.
This is a movie about Tom. He was always influenced by the television culture and always believed that somewhere theres the right person in store for you. This movie is about him coming to terms with life. This is about him realizing that life is just about co-incidences. And that is what finally helps him get over his predicament.
Both Joseph and Zooey have given incredible performances for their respective roles. Joseph portraying a guy who is heart broken is fantastic. His changing philosophies through the entire movie is handled with utmost care and never goes out of bounds.
In a way this is a love story, but it is probably the most believable love story ever made. The chemistry between Tom and Summer is heartwarming. And the end where Tom finally starts looking at life in a different way will bring a smile on anybody's fact. Why this movie works where most don't is that everyone can relate to this movie. Most of us have been through the difficult phase of a heartbreak and so we can really empathize with Tom. Hats off to Marc Webb for this masterpiece.
My score - 9/10.
