Thibaw Palace

This 100 year old palace, which is situated on a lush green hillock, is an ideal sunset point and one of the major tourist attractions of the district. The three storied palace has the beautifully carved walls speaking of its rich cultural encounters with the then exiled King of Burma, King Thibaw Min and his family, who were kept under house arrest here when Burma was a part of India. Today, the palace is serenely silenced and boasts of some of the most beautiful architectural carvings and a beautiful statue of Lord Buddha at the back of the palace.

Trip to Ganpatipule

One can’t leave Ratnagiri without quickly taking a trip to Ganpatipule, situated at a distance of 25 Km that can be quickly accessed by a drive down the well-maintained roads girdled by lush green environs. The beautiful Ganesha - ‘Swayambhu’ Temple made of one massive rock beholds your sight like nothing else. The temple is flocked by people from all over the country, and the number of devotes multiply during the Ganesh festival when the place is more beautifully endowed. It’s also one of the most important beaches in Maharashtra with its fine, sifted sands and crystal clear water.

Ratnadurg Fort

Overlooking the Arabian Sea, the Ratnadurg Fort offers a splendid view of the setting sun and beautiful landscape surrounding this massive structure. In the shape of a horseshoe the place was once a stronghold of the Maratha Empire and is now a prominent tourist destination. Apart from these one must also visit the Sangameshwar Fort,

Gastronomical delights

This place is bliss for fish lovers as one of the main attractions in every meal is a delicacy of fish. And is often served with rice and Sol kadi (pink coloured coconut milk), that serves as a staple diet in many Konkani homes.

Shopping in Ratnagiri

The place offers some of the most unusual yet enchanting artefacts made of seashells. If you visit the place during the April-May season then you surely can’t go home without Hapus mangoes. But if you can’t hop in during that season, then the phanaspoli (jackfruit slices) and amba poli (mango slices) act as perfect, tasty takeaways. Cashewnuts, coconuts, dry fish, jackfruits and a lot of other foodie delights are available easily at every alternate store.

How to Reach Ratnagiri

Road: Around 365 kms by road, the ride can be an exhilarating experience with the beautiful panoramas that the place has to offer. One can either hop into a private car or go by bus.

Air: The closest airport is the Chattrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai from where one would have to either hire a cab or take a bus.

Rail: This is one of the best ways to reach Ratnagiri if you catch a Konkan Railway train or any other that stops at this station.
