Active flow control past airfoils using CFD

Introduction

Understanding flow past aero foils is of practical interest to a variety of fields such as turbo-machinery, aircrafts and wind turbines etc.In the context of aerospace applications, high lift and low drag yielding geometries are highly desirable. Therefore, understanding boundary layers, wakes and their active manipulation is a precursor to produce energy efficient systems and devices. To this end, both passive and active flow control strategies can be formulated to achieve the desired goal. Active flow control strategy is well suited for goals that require improved high lift.

Several active flow control methodologies are available in the literatures such as moving wall boundary layer control, suction and blowing and acoustic actuators.

Motivation:

Through systematic experimental investigations, modi and his members have shown that rotating elements can be used to achieve high lift aerofoils.extensive tests were conducted to study investigate the influences of momentum injection versus angle of attack (a) for different Uc/U8 values. It has been found that, as the rate of rotation is increased, the size of the separated region is reduced, and at higher rates of rotation, the flow is again completely attached. Piezo-ceramic materials have emerged as new tools for the health monitoring of large-scale structures due to their advantages of active sensing, low cost, quick response, availability in different shapes and simplicity for implementation[].andrew.a.berlin has conducted experiments on composite steel/piezo columns and shown that columns made of piezo material have achieved a factor of 5.6 in load bearing capability through active stabilization of the first two uni-axial buckling modes[].it has also proven that the dynamic buckling load for a plate can be improved by piezo ceramic actuators.
