UGC - National Seminar On Ageing in India: socio-economic, DEMOGRAPHIC and health implication 22- 23 February, 2008.
Venue ANNAMALAIUNIVERSITY ANNAMALAI NAGAR TAMILNADU – 608 002
About the Workshop: Population ageing is emerging as a serious problem in many South Asian Countries. The growth rate of the population aged 60 and above exceeds that of national populations.
The elderly in South Asian Countries face many problems such as insolvency, loss of authority, social insecurity, insufficient recreational facilities, lack of overall physical and mental care, problems associated with having arrangements etc.
In India, the life expectancy has gone up from 20 years in the beginning of the 20th Century to 64 years today. Better medical facilities, care and low fertility made the elderly the fastest growing section of the society. The persons above 60 years of age are classified as aged persons in India. It took more than 100 years for the aged population to double in many countries in the world. But in India it has doubled in 25 years, 12 million elderly people in 1901 has been increased to 77 million in the year 2001. It has been estimated that the elderly population will reach 177 million in the year 2025. While the numbers have gone up, the quality of life has gone down. Industrialisation, Migration, Urbanization and Westernisation have severely affected value systems. The erstwhile joint family, the natural support system, has crumbled. The fast changing pace of life has added to the woes of the older persons. This has lead to severe adverse effects on the status and well-being of the elderly. Further more, in the process, elderly women, especially widowed, are likely to face more problems as compared to elderly men because of differences in their status and role in the society. So also urban elderly are likely to suffer more as compared to rural older persons. At the same time as the population age structure shifts, the population of older people will increase in population to that of younger people, especially those of ‘Working age’. This shift has profound policy implications for persons and income support, for job creation and employment, for health and elder care system and for economic growth and development in every country. Considering all these issues, the Department of Population Studies, Annamalai University, has proposed to organize a National Seminar on Ageing in India: socio-economic, demographic and health implications, during 22-23 Feb, 2008 at Annamalai University, Tamil nadu.
