PROSPECTUS
PROLOGUE
The University of Calicut, established in 1968, the second University to be set up in Kerala was opened as a part of the affirmative policy of the government in response to the challenges offered by the geo-political unit of Malabar. It aimed to bring higher education within the purview of one and all, thus developing the human resources. Promoting research with special emphasis on technology, art and culture of Kerala was its goal.
Enfolding in its clasp the 4 post-graduate departments (set up by the University of Kerala at Calicut) and 54 constituent Colleges, spread across 7 northern districts, the University took the first step of its successful journey. Currently it has 25 post graduate departments and 266 affiliated colleges and is the largest residential cum affiliating University in Kerala. It has slowly but steadily branched out and now has extension centres at Thrissur, Calicut and Vatakara. The governance of the University has the following structure.

SCHOOL OF DISTANCE EDUCATION
The School of Distance Education, one of the major departments of the University was established in 1981. Now it is a major education provider in Kerala with an annual enrolment of 30,000 students. The students of the School of Distance Education can use the library of the School of Distance Education as well as the CHMK Library of the University, both located at the campus.
ACADEMIC INDUCTION
Programme Centres and Study Centres:
Programme Centres and Study Centres are being evolved envisaging to conduct the courses, utilizing the infra-structure available in that centre. Programme Centre for B.Psych is Family Appostolate Training and Research Institute, Trissur. Programme Centres for Bachelor of Multimedia Communication (BMMC) are JDT Islam College of Arts and Science, Kozhikode and Muslim Educational and Cultural Organisation (MESCO), Hyderabad.
Contact Classes
The detailed time table of contact classes will be sent to the students well in advance of the commencement of the programme. The classes will be taken by teachers of the colleges affiliated to the Universities in Kerala and by experts in the field. The method of teaching in contact class is different from that of regular class room. Students are expected to attend the class with thorough preparation. The effectiveness of the class depends on the sense of co-operation of the students. Contact class programmes for the P.G. courses shall be arranged for courses having enrolment of more than 50 students. There shall be lectures, group discussions and seminars with the help of audio-visual aids wherever necessary during the programme.
Contact classes for B.A/B.Sc/BCom./BBA/MA/MSc./M.Com. students will be held on Saturdays and Sundays at any of the institutions in the districts identified for the purpose.
Academic Induction
Every student who gets registration for the programme should be physically present in one of the counselling/study centres for academic induction. Their presence is mandatory and absence may amount to cancellation of the registration. The academic induction is conceived to be a formal meeting between the new entrants and the academic counselors and the officials of SDE. The study materials and other relevant documents will be distributed at the centre on that day.
Study Material Distribution and Feed back:
Study Materials will be distributed to the students during the time of the academic counseling at the Contact Class Centre. The feed back in a prescribed format will also be collected from the students to ensure the better functioning of the system.
Attendance
Attendance in B.A/B.Sc/B.Com/MA/MSc./MCom degree contact classes is compulsory. Students of BLISc should attend the practical classes compulsorily and should have the minimum attendance in lectures, seminars, tutorials and observation works.
