The Department was established in 1995 with financial assistance form the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India to conduct post-graduate programme in Biotechnology. The main objective of the programme is to develop human resource to meet the growing demand for biotechnologists in the field of food, agriculture, medicine and environmental management. This is the only department of its kind to be set by the DBT. Conceptualized and launched under the chairmanship of Prof. V.J. Philip, it has gained a reputation as a major centre for studies and research. M.Sc. Course: The M.Sc. Biotechnology programme is under semester system and admission to this course is based on the merit list of all India combined entrance examination conducted by Jawaharilal Nehru University, New Delhi. The students admitted to M.Sc. Biotechnology are given a monthly scholarship of Rs. 1200/- for two years by the DBT, Govt. of India. The Biotechnology Consortium of India, New Delhi Ltd. (BCI) also provides placement services to the students in various industries. The techlonogy developed in the Department for the clonal propagation of Vanila has already reached the farmer’s fields under the aegis of the Spices Board of India and the DBT. The Department is also actively engaged in the biotechnology based programmes for society under a project funded by the DBT, Govt. of India had been completed.
