Ande Agassi's Fall from Grace
|
Whether it is a ploy to promote his upcoming autobiograaphy or inner voice from his conscience? Whatever it is, Andre Agassi's recent confession of having taken hard drugs during his illustrious Tennis career has shocked the entire sports world.
The American, one of the most graceful players on Tennis court, one who used to be huge hit anywhere he played, be it Wimbledon grass or colourful clay courts of Paris. He was a true darling of crowd at Flushing Meadows. All those who adored him must have received a rude shock to know this revelation that Agassi regularly consumed a banned and highly addictive drug, crystal methamphetamine, during his playing days. Even more disgusting is the fact that he was successful in making ATP believe that he had taken it accidently.
The drug, crystal methamphetamine, is not a performance enhancing drug. It is classified as a 'Recreational Drug' which if found to be consumed by an athlete, attracts a three month suspension. Even if it seems to be a minor punishment, had it come at that time, in 1997, Agassi's career might not have been as prolonged and as successful. In fact Agassi's resurgent period of career started only after that incidence. So, in a way, his successful career is based on a blatant lie, which he was able to convince the ATP to be the truth.
Revelations of consumption of drugs by athletes in different sports is not new. In fact the history of performance enhancing drugs is as old as the history of sports! But if and when found guilty, the sportspersons have been punished severly. Ben Johnson was stripped of his world record and banned for life when he was found guilty in 1988 Olympics. Marion Jones, the star US track and field athlete, in a la Carl Lewis mould ( she was a champion in sprints and long jump too ) when , in 2007, she admitted to have taken performance enhancing drugs, had to forefeit all the prize money and medals she had won since Sept 2000.
It remains to be seen whether Andre Agassi is also handed some such retrospective punishment or not. Till then for all those who admired the presence of one of the most colourful players on Tennis court, this is nothing short of a rude shock.
