Workshop on ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS OF BIOMEDICAL SIGNALS
Feburary 29th & 22nd, 2008

S.R.M University,
Chennai.

Seminar-cum-Workshop on ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS OF BIOMEDICAL SIGNALS

Medical research draws heavily on the study of biomedical signals like ECG, EEG etc. This calls for basic understanding of the methods involved in acquisition of the signals and accurate interpretation of the data. The need for precision and reproducibility of the methods cannot be overestimated. The results of such research work add to the current knowledge bank and form the basis for institution of new schemes in patient management.

The advent of computers has brought about a complete transformation of the medical scenario. Once considered a necessity for preclinical and paraclinical laboratory work, smoked papers on the kymograph and ink pen recorders can be safely relegated to the pages of history. Nowadays, reports generated using sophisticated gadgets can be recorded, stored and analyzed in the areas of patient care and research. Though these computer-based devices present no difficulty as far as the basic operation is concerned, an incomplete understanding of the workings of the equipment limits exploitation of its potential to the full.

To bridge the gap between the current and potential application of computers in the fields of teaching and research, the Department of Physiology, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre in collaboration with the Association of the Physiologists of Tamil Nadu has conceived a seminar-cum-workshop on the topic: "Acquisition and analysis of Biomedical Signals".

The objectives of the sessions are:

To improve comprehension of the process by which biomedical signals are recorded, stored and analysed using computers

To acquaint participants in the workshop with the operation of computers and analog-to-digital converters for recording biomedical electrical signals such as ECG and EEG

To facilitate the teaching of amphibian, mammalian and human experiments in basic medical sciences with the help of various transducers, polygraphs and different software packages

Program Outline :

The seminar on "Acquisition and Analysis of Biomedical Signals" is planned for the session I from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. An eclectic selection of topics ranging from basic principles to the advancing front in the interdisciplinary field of biomedical engineering will be presented by distinguished professor in the field. The line-up of topics and the respective guest speakers is as follows:

The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers B.Tech and M.Tech programmes in Biomedical Engineering. The departments have full-fledged laboratories that comprise of sophisticated equipments to meet the practical requirements of students. Department consists of qualified, dynamic and self-motivated faculty members. Our aim is to equip all the students with strong foundation and technological skills in their relative areas. The department has also frequently engaged itself in conducting several National level conferences, seminars and workshops for the benefit of students and teachers.
