HISTORY
HistoryOsmania University, founded on October 5,1918 by a Royal Decree of the thenruler of Hyderabad, H E H Nawab Sir Mir Osman Ali Khan Bahadur, the seventhNizam, owes its name to him. The idea of the univ was, however, conceivedby Sir Akbar Hydari who became the Prime Minister of the former State ofHyderabad. Sir Akbar had conceived Osmania as a unitary and residentialuniv with colleges, libraries, hostels, residential quarters, playgrounds,halls, etc located on campus of about 1,612 acres of which 184 acres ofland was allotted to different institutions outside the city. The idea of aunitary univ had to be given up as the demand for higher education withinits territorial limits increased and in course of time, Osmania becameteaching and affiliating univ.Till 1947 the univ was a limb of the Government. But in that year with thevision of Dr Wali Mohammed, its Vice-Chancellor, Osmania was granted arevised Charter and became autonomous. In 1959, the Charter was replaced byan Act of the 'Andhra Pradesh Legislature, the Osmania University Act,1959, which brought it in line with other two regional universities in theState, Osmania is now governed by this Act, as amended in 1966, 1976 and1981 & 1991.
JURISDICTION
JurisdictionThe jurisdiction of the univ comprises the districts of Hyderabad,Mahboobnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Rangareddy and Nizamabad in Andhra Pradesh.The univ runs seven colleges on the campus, 6 constituent colleges outsidethe campus, 8 PG centres and has 478 affiliated colleges (includingoriental colleges). During 1993-94 four PG Centres were set up at Medak,Gadwal, Siddipet and Vikrabad. Further the PG Centres at Kothagudam,Godavarikhand and Karimnagar have been transferred to the KakatiyaUniversity. Enrollment (2000-01) 1,81,250 (Men 1,11,438; Women 69,812).
