Vivekananda College gears up for a grand finale

Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College (autonomous) is all set to conduct a series of events from Wednesday in connection with the valedictory of its diamond jubilee celebrations.
Addressing a press meet held in this connection on Monday, assistant secretary of the college S. Ramakrishnan said a national seminar on the ‘Impact of economic reforms on the Indian economy’, a science conference covering advancements in the basic and physical sciences, and a series of lectures by senior academics are among the events scheduled.
The valedictory, spanning six days from Friday, will feature eminent speakers. It will be followed by Carnatic music concerts by artistes including T.V. Sankaranarayanan, N. Vijay Siva, Sanjay Subramaniam and T.M. Krishna. “Most of the speakers and performers are alumni of the institution,” he said.
Secretary of the college Swami Atmaghanananda said the event was a celebration of Swami Vivekananda’s message: Education is the only panacea for all evils in our society. The institution believed in making quality education accessible to all, he said.
Outlining the college activities, principal-in-charge G. Sreenivasa Prabhu said the two research wings of the institution, namely the Vivekananda Institute of Tropical Mycology and the Vivekananda Institute of Algal Technology, were involved in academic research and industrial consultancy.
The management committee is also considering launching a management programme and certificate courses in areas such as e-banking and risk management, which would add value to the Bachelors in Commerce programme, one of the most sought-after courses offered by the institution.
In order to attract more students to the pure science streams, the nomenclature of courses in botany and zoology were changed to ‘plant biology’ and ‘plant biotechnology’, and ‘advanced zoology’ and ‘biotechnology’ respectively.
“We have made these courses more application-oriented,” Mr. Sreenivasa Prabhu said.
All the events to be held as part of the valedictory of the diamond jubilee are open to the public.
