The district administration here has hit upon a way to save girl students from harassment - keep them inside colleges till 4 pm.

Two leading girls' colleges in this mining town have been directed to confine their students to the premises during college hours to prevent law and order problems.

The two colleges that received additional district magistrate (law and order) Rajmohan Tiwari's circular - SSNT Girls College and BSS Mahila College - are both located opposite the SP's bungalow.

Tiwari told TOI: "I have not issued any injunction nor any notice under Section 144 CrPC. I have simply advised the two principals to keep the girls secure."

The administration's move has triggered protests from students and teachers, who find it difficult to follow the timings as most of them come from distant places on buses arranged by coal firms.
