The students of Bangabasi College of Commerce today boycotted their classes and went on an indefinite hunger strike alleging that teachers in the college, instead of taking classes, are more keen on private tuition and playing computer games. This comes three days after teachers in the college decided not to take any class after students had insulted and threatened some of their colleagues. According to reports, students of first, second and third year demonstrated in front of their college building today demanding that teachers should take their classes regularly. Some students alleged that they had tried to attract the principal’s attention on the matter, but in vain. “We had complained that some teachers spend the entire day in the computer room playing computer games. They never attend any classes,” alleged a student. “We confined the principal along with some teachers till 11 pm on Friday. Mr Sarkar assured us that classes would be held regularly in the college. But the situation deteriorated as teachers boycotted classes from the very next day. For the last few days no classes were held in the college,” said Mr Milan Debnath, general secretary of the students union in the college. Teachers, however, strongly refuted the charges. The allegation is absolutely baseless. Teachers come to the college to teach and not to play computer games. It is the students who loiter in the building and do not attend classes. Students had insulted and threatened some teachers on 30 August. Following this, teachers had collectively decided to boycott their classes. “We never expect this from students. Thus no classes were held for the last two days,” said Prof Sanjay Ray, teacher-in-charge and head of the commerce department. Prof. Ray also added that teachers had approached the principal to ensure their security. He said that it was impossible for him to say why students leveled accusations against the teachers. “Classes were held irregularly in the college ever since the new academic session started,” said Mr Sourav Chakraborty, president, Chatra Parishad. Meanwhile, it was learnt that the students union has requested the registrar of Calcutta University (CU) to visit the college. The strike will continue till we receive assurance that classes will be held regularly, Mr Chakraborty added. Prof Samir Bandopadhyay, registrar, Calcutta University said: “The students union is yet to submit any written complaint to the university. Once that is done, we will take up the issue.”
