Short-Term Course on Mathematical Modeling And Mathematics
March 10 – 14, 2008 (Sponsored by AICTE) at IIT Delhi,India
Announcement :
Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi will be conducting a short-term course on “Mathematical Modeling And Mathematics” from March 10 to March 14, 2008.
Overview :
Mathematical Modeling, a process of obtaining a reasonable mathematical representation for any real world dynamic system under study, has been an important diverse activity with many interesting aspects in so much so that it is now accepted as a discipline in itself from R&D point of view.
In fact, it has been well realised that mathematical models can be used for an understanding of a system with a little information, almost like a thought experiment, or to make predictions for problems where the model is well understood. The process of learning about this, many a times, help in approaching other unstructured problems (having no mathematical involvement) in a more systematic way, i.e., thinking about problems more analytically can often indicate what parameters need to be measured in order to test hypothesis or to determine some unexplained behaviour.
The course is aimed to give an exposure to certain practices in mathematical modeling commonly in use in science and engineering; and stimulate an interest in the field of modeling. To demonstrate the potential of concepts and the interplay between mathematics and application, lectures are planned by the experts from various engineering disciplines. The building blocks of models will be picked up mainly from the world of calculus, algebra, analysis, differential equations, etc.
Model Base :
Discrete Models Continuous Models Optimisation Techniques Waves and Oscillations Simulation Methods Financial Mathematics Software aspects
Participation :
The participation to this course under the Quality Improvement Programme is open to full time regular/ permanent teachers of AICTE recognised degree level engineering colleges, technical universities & TTTI. The participants are expected to be involved in R&D for needs of their respective disciplines. Applicants are advised to attach one page write up indicating their interest and expectation from the course, so that it helps us in selecting the candidature in order to make their participation comfortable with the subject. Selected candidates will be paid second-class rail fare by the shortest route as per rules.
Venue:
Department of Civil Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Delhi Hauz Khas New Delhi – 110 016.
