Linguists have something to cheer about. The State Government is actively considering a proposal to set up a full-fledged campus of the prestigious Hyderabad-based English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), formerly the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages, in the State.
The move is part of inviting leading education and research institutions in the country to open shop here. Education Minister M.A. Baby told The Hindu that the State was keen about the proposal and the Government would soon discuss the issue.
The Cabinet would consider a request for providing land for the proposed campus. Detailed discussions would be held with EFLU authorities before going ahead with the project. The site for the regional campus and other facilities would be finalised only after detailed talks, he said.
Vice-Chancellor of EFLU Abhai Maurya told The Hindu over telephone from Hyderabad on Monday that the proposed institution would not be a regional centre, but a full-fledged multi-campus. “It will be a replica of the central ca mpus in Hyderabad. We might need at least 50 acres to set up the campus. “The more (land) the better,” he said. Courses proposed
Prof. Maurya said that many States had expressed interest in setting up EFLU campuses. Besides the main campus at Hyderabad, the institute has regional centres at Shillong and Lucknow.
The Vice-Chancellor said that the proposed new campuses would focus on five-year integrated postgraduate courses, along with other programmes in foreign languages. Admission to these programmes would be done on the basis of a national-level written test and interview.
“We will soon write a letter to the Education Minister requesting him to give a detailed proposal expressing consent for setting up the campus in Kerala. Resources for the new campuses could be generated using the assistance given by the MHRD [Union Ministry of Human Resource Development], the University Grants Commission and the respective State Governments,” Prof. Maurya said.
Kerala’s longstanding wish to have a Central university might become true with the launch of the proposed campus. The Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages was elevated into a Central university recently by an Act of Parliament. With its upgrading, EFLU became the 24th Central university.
Prof. Maurya of the Department of Slavic Studies, University of Delhi, had assumed office as the first Vice-Chancellor of EFLU, Hyderabad, on August 3.
