While many would spend the day singing paeans to the teaching fraternity on the eve of Teacher's Day, Acharya Sudarshan, who spoke at length on various aspects of teaching chose to be different.
Sudarshan attributed the loss of grace in the teaching profession to increasing commercialisation. "There was a time when teachers used to impart whatever knowledge they had without expecting anything in return. Things, have changed now as many teachers have made education a commodity leading to the degradation of the profession," he said.
The educationist from Bihar also came up with a totally different view on the increasing arrogance among students. "How can you expect respect when you are not willing to be true to the students. Teachers should go back to the basics and to set examples if they want to command respect from the pupils," he said.
He urged the teaching community to take responsibility of making at least five of their students good citizens. Writer of famous book 'Integral Education', Sudarshan has also a word of wisdom for parents, whom he urged not to be over imposing in deciding the future of their wards. Pressure to follow a particular line may give birth to frustration in them, he opined.
