National Institute of Technology in Karaikal

It is a good news of Puducherry students, because one of the prestigious colleges NIT has decided to start another NIT and this time it is in Karaikal, Puducherry Union Territory. Before this announcement, there were rumors that Pondicherry Engineering College may be converted into NIT. But now it is confirmed that NIT will start functioning in Karaikal from this academic year. This is a great boost for students and that too students from Puducherry.

The director of NIT , Trichy, Mr. Chidambaram has visited the site for the construction of the college ( 277 acres) and here are some statistical data

1) At present there are 20 NIT all over India and 8 more colleges will be opened in the academic year 2010-11, and out of this 8 NIT's, one will be in Karaikal.

2) During the first academic year only three course will e available, namely

i) ECE
ii) EEE
iii) CSE

3) It is believed that a total of 180 seats will be allotted, with 60 in each department.

4) Out of 180 seats, 90 will be allotted for Puducherry UT students.

5) Within 6 years the college will be completed, and each year 20 crores will be given for the construction work.

6)Even though there will be only three departments in NIT Karaikal,at present, but later it is expected that many departments like Civil, Mechanical, M tech etc. will be added.

So it is a great news for students and let us hope that opening of many NIT colleges does not brings down the quality of NIT Standards.
