A internet protocol is a set of rules that are applicable for internet. It define standardised formats for data, techniques for detecting and correcting errors, etc. The commonly used internet protocol are TCP/IP, FTP, HTTP, Telnet, and Gopher.


TCP/IP is a collection of protocols used with internet. TCP stands for Transmission control Protocol and IP stands for internet protocol. Data trasferring in internet is done in small packets that can be handled effectively by the network. It also varifies whether all the packets have arrived at the destination and then reassemle them.


The IP envolves and the address the data. It enable the network to read the address and forward to the destination. It also define how much data can fit in a single envelope.

stands for File Transmission Protocol. It is a part of TCP/IP. This protocol enables file transfer between computers.

stands for Hyper Text Transfer protocol. This protocol governs the transfer of Hyper Text between computers in the network. Hyper Text in a webpage creats a link to another resource such as another web page image, sound, animation, etc.

Telnet enables one computer to connect to another computer. This process is known as remote login. A local computer can be connected to a remote or host computer using this protocol.

Gopher is used for funneling through the internet. It allows the user to search, retrieve and display documents from remote site on the internet.
