How to improve average/mileage of your 4 stroke petrol bike

Here are some tips about improving the average/mileage of a 4 stroke bike.

1) The carburetor of 4 stroke engine is a very important part which determines the mileage. The air filter attached to the carburetor must be cleaned/washed at least once in a month or every 15 days.

While washing the filter-sponges care should be taken that it should not be damaged; the filter sponges must be dried properly after washing for no moisture. Usually the petrol is the best option for washing as it is volatile but if it is becoming costly use kerosene.

After washing the sponges a small amount of 4T oil is applied to the sponges and made a little of oil-wet which is helpful to catch the dust and dirt and
deposit to the sponge thus filter prevents the entry of dust/dirt to the
carburetor and thus to engine.

Cleaning of throttle needle is very important. This makes the free movement and thus makes optimized flow of petrol.

2) Setting of carburetor is a very important work. The carburetor is having two main screws; one for air flow setting and other petrol flow setting. The screw is of no more importance since it is helpful as a drain screw for
removing petrol from carburetor.

For setting the idling first tighten air flow screw to three fourth (clockwise) and petrol screw also clockwise such that maximum rpm of engine occurs( no fully- do not allow engine to run for longer time as it may overheat the engine parts). Within a very short time adjust the air flow screw to such a position that maximum free running sound of engine comes out.

Now when there is a free running, once again adjust the petrol flow screw by rotating anticlockwise to allow for required idling speed.

For more pickup more petrol is to be released which lowers mileage and for more average less pickup is expected.

( Please do not try this is you do not have at least some basic knowledge about bike other than driving since improper carburetor setting may consume more fuel than the required.)

3) After every 7000 to 8000 km the wheel bearings must be greased.Since the less friction always causes speed to increase hence less fuel is required.

The wheels are to be adjusted properly with exact braking, providing proper gaps for braking shoes and drum from inside. If the shoes touch the drum unnecessarily then speed of the vehicle is lowered.

The air pressure is always checked for proper value since low pressure makes the engine load more hence more fuel is wasted so keep an optimum pressure.

4) Always keep on adjusting the clutch for proper play.Do not press the clutch frequently while speeding up, it causes no contact to transmission properly hence waste of fuel.

Always lower the throttle while braking. Specially when in traffic do not exceed the the rpm of the engine, it wastes the fuel as well as overheats the engine.

5) Many people have a hobby of driving their bike during night,a good one, they sometime modify configuration of the bike such as changing the front head light bulbs for higher illumination which are high wattage and may over cross the limit of dynamo which may result in additional power requirement for the dynamo to generate electrical power.
Check dynamo specifications and use recommended lamps only.

6) Changing the engine oil is very important to improve the engine life, better performance and efficient cooling for mechanical parts. The engine oil must me changed every 2500- 3000 km normally.

Good quality and high performance oils may be used up to 4000-5000 km but may be costly.

7) Use of good quality petrol gives good mileage.

8) Servicing the bike time to time is very important it helps to run the bike in proper operation.

9) Driving at a speed below 50 kmph is a better sign of good mileage.

Experience make a person perfect. A good conditioned bike with proper maintenance and service of course outputs less emissions (CO) helping low pollution and global warming.
