, Lakhimpur Review

Lakhimpur is comparatively lesser known city of Assam. It is about 380 km from Guwahati and can be reached by air, water and road. The city is small but there are some tea plantations and the cottage industries of the place are really awesome.

I had a chance to visit Lakhimpur when I decided to meet one of my friends working in a nearby tea plantation. Arunachal Express operates between Lakhimpur and Guwahati via Rangia, Rangapara, Biswanath Chariali etc. This train leaves Guwahati n the evening and reaches Lakhimpur by the next morning. The railway station is situated in Nakari, approximately 2 km. from the town.

I took the evening train Arunachal Express from Guwahait and reached there in the morning. The railway station is situated in Nakari, approximately 2 km. from the town. Since I was alone carrying only a small attaché, I decided to cover the distance on foot. I was in search of a good hotel when someone suggested me to go for Hotel Shyam. I walked a little more and soon reached the hotel in the centre of the city. Since it was the time of Navaratri, I was glad to know that it was the only hotel in the town serving vegetarian food. After all, I have reached the right place, I thought.

The hotel has only twenty rooms and the tariff! Only 50/- for a single bed room, probably the cheapest one I have ever stayed. Besides single, there are some double rooms (Rs.80/- to 100/-) and a four bed dormitory (Rs.30/- per bed).

But all the rooms are spacious and decorated with modern furniture. All modern amenities like Cable TV, telephone, laundry service and a spacious car parking. The vegetarian restaurant attached to the hotel serves breakfast, snacks, lunch and dinner to the guests.

Since I was feeling tired after a strenuous overnight train journey, I decided to take a bath before having something as breakfast. The room attendant, an ever smiling young boy, brought breakfast the steaming hot puris, together with the bamboo shoot curry. I was a little afraid as I had never tasted it before but the aroma of the curry lured me so much that without any hesitation, I took a spoonful and put it in my mouth. What a taste! I finished it at once and could not prevent myself from ordering for another plate.
